Crank

Ellen Hopkins

-- Stephanie Spence (Staff Writer)

Crank is a realistic fiction book. It is by Ellen Hopkins. This amazing book is written completely in poems and is a story of a good girl gone bad. It starts out as a summer trip for Kristina Snow to visit her dad in New Mexico which ends up messing with her life forever. She meets a boy who introduces her to the monster, Crank and she discovers her alter-ego Bree. What starts out as a wild ride ends up in a struggle for Kristina’s soul, mind, and even her life.

Crank is a New York Times bestseller for a reason. It is a gripping tale that is powerful and unsettling. Her story is gritty with a hard, in-your-face truth. It is an amazing portrayal of a teen’s loss of direction and self. This novel was based loosely off of Ellen Hopkins’ daughter’s own experience with crystal meth. Once you pick up this book you won’t want to put it down. This is one book you won’t soon forget!
