On Fortune's Wheel

Cynthia Voigt

--Stephanie Spence (Staff Writer)

A good book is On Fortune’s Wheel by Cynthia Voigt. It is a young adult book about a young girl named Birle. Late one night, she dives into a river in a rash pursuit of a supposed thief. Birle falls for this stranger with bellflower eyes and vows to follow him wherever he goes. She leaves behind a promise to marry a huntsman, Muir, and her life as an innkeeper’s daughter and embarks on a journey that will take her to places far away from home and gives her tribulations and adventure along the way.
This book uses fortune’s wheel as one of its main themes. It is based on the statement about fortune’s wheel in the book. “There are some who say that the Lady Fortune has a wheel, and all men are fixed upon it. The wheel turns, and the men rise, or fall, with the turning of the wheel.” Another thing I think the author was trying to get across was that there are consequences for your actions.
This book would probably be put under the genre of fantasy and romance. If you like a book with adventure, romance, or just simply a good book, this book is for you. Cynthia Voigt is a great writer and won a Newbery Medal for one of her other books.
On Fortune’s Wheel was very interesting and well organized. It blends relatable characters and an interesting plot, with keen psychological insights. This book was very thorough and provided a surprising, but profoundly fulfilling ending. I would strongly recommend reading this book.
