The Sun Also Rises Ernest Hemingway |
--Kara Curry (Staff Writer)
The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway is a decent book, but leaves something to be desired. The hardback edition of the book is 259 pages. Although the book starts slow and can be boring in the beginning, if you can make it through the first 80 pages, the book picks up and gets interesting. The main character of the book is Jake Barnes. He was wounded in World War I, rendering him impotent. Jake and his friend Robert Cohn plan on going to Pamplona, Spain to see bullfighting. He and his friend Bill Gorton make arrangements to go fishing before watching the bullfights in Spain. Before Jake and Bill leave on their trip, Jake meets another friend of his, Brett, and her fiancé, Michael, who want to come to the bullfight. Brett is the woman that he is in love with. After Mike leaves, Brett tells Jake that she had an affair with another one of his friends, Robert. Jake and Bill leave before Mike and Brett so that they can go fishing before they meet in Pamplona to watch the fights. During this tri,p Jake and Bill meet Robert and he tags along. When the three men reach the hotel where they are supposed to meet Brett and Mike, Robert waits for the couple while Jake and Bill go fishing. Eventually the friends meet in Pamplona where the fiesta is beginning. Mike can tell that Robert is interested in Brett, mocks him and tells him that he isn’t wanted the entire time they are in Spain. While this is happening, Brett “falls in love” with a young bullfighter named Pedro Romero. In the end, nothing has changed, Jake is in love with Brett, Brett is engaged to Mike, and Jake is friends with Bill and Robert. |
