Sweeney Todd

Amanda Brown (Staff Writer)

Sweeney Todd is another great film made by Tim Burton. Tim has the master mind to create gruesome movies. That’s why Sweeney Todd is such a great movie. It has loads of blood, gore, and musical numbers.

The man Sweeney Todd is played by the actor Johnny Depp. The movie starts off with Benjamin Barker, a skilled barber, and his lovely wife having a wonderful time with their baby girl outside in the city of London. A judge known as Turpin saw Ben’s wife and fell in love. Ben was falsely charged and sentenced to a life of hard labor in Australia by the corrupt Judge Turpin.

Ben comes back to London under the name Sweeney Todd. He comes back with his shipmate Anthony. Sweeny gets a place at a bakery and meets Mrs. Lovett. Mrs. Lovett was a widow who signals her enduring love for Sweeney by having carefully kept his collection of gleaming razors through the years. She gives him the place above the bakery and he opens a barbershop.

Since Sweeney has lost his wife and daughter he seeks revenge on judge Turpin. Sweeney finds out that his wife had killed herself and his daughter, Johanna, is held captive in judge Turpin’s place. Anthony had saw Johanna in her window singing and he fell in love.

When Sweeney returns to reopen his barber shop, he becomes the Demon Barber of Fleet Street who shaved the faces of gentlemen who never thereafter were heard from again. Mrs. Lovett makes meat pies out of the dead bodies and her business booms back to life.

Sweeney once had the judge in his clutches but then was ruined when Anthony barged in and the judge recognized the boy who loved his captive Johanna. The judge started to catch on their plan so he decides to send Johanna to an asylum.

This movie is a great musical with gruesomeness. It’s a mixture of a musical and horror in one with great sound effects and singing voices but the blood lacks realism.
