Campus Connections is a program that is funded by the Girls Scouts but is not the Girl Scouts. This program is still in the trial stage because this is the first year they have used it. Anyone in grades 9-12 can join this program, and stay in it until they graduate high school. If you decide you no longer want to be in the program you can leave it at your discretion.
The goal for the program is to strengthen girls’ leadership and communication skills and to learn to take action. Campus Connections is trying to create a better world for girls. The girls get to go on trips, see plays at the University, and attend banquets.
Waynesburg University has students in the English Department be the “teachers” in the schools. Girls in West Greene, Central Greene, and Jefferson Morgan attend meetings once a week during school. These meetings are headed by the students attending Waynesburg University. At the meetings, students discuss the “Visionary Award”. This award has guidelines that must be met. There are three categories they must complete something in. They are: create it, guide it, and change it.
In the “create it” category, the students must complete an art project and share it. The West Greene group decided to put mini murals on the columns in the cafeteria. They are not finished yet, however they have time to bring them to an end.
The “guide it” section states that the girls must take part in a discussion, meeting, or any other “talk about it” item. This helps them organize a meeting and discuss how to improve their leadership skills. They brainstorm better ways to live life.
The last part is “change it”. In this section, the girls must take action. They must try to improve their community in some way. The team must complete a process while they are doing the projects. The Central Greene girls decided to host “White Out Day”. Students “wipe out” drugs in school and out of school. They used White Out to wipe away drugs on paper. They used the morning “Raider Report” to inform the students of what they were doing. Many students were involved. The students from Jefferson Morgan organized a powder puff football game for the girls in the school. At their school, girls are not allowed to play on the real football team and they do not have a girls’ team. At West Greene, the girls wrote inspirational words on Christmas cards and gave them to the patients at Waynesburg Hospital. The West Greene Girls also thought of an idea of a teen center. This would allow teens to have a neat place to have safe fun after school and on the weekends. All schools will be helping achieve this goal hopefully before they graduate. The groups from each school must do a service project in the school and out of the school.
Did you know?
There are ZERO countries in the world that offer women equal wages as men. 1% of the world’s assets are held in the name of a woman. 2% of senior management positions are occupied by women in business worldwide. 50% of sexual assaults worldwide are against girls 15 years old or younger. 53% of 13 years old girls in the US say they are not happy with their body. 66% of 15-19-year-olds newly infected with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa are girls. 70% of the 1.5 billion people living on one dollar a day or less are female. 75% of war fatalities are women and children. 100 MILLION girls are missing around the world. The Campus Connections program is trying to improve those facts one little step at a time. If you would like to join the program please see your guidance counselor.
