Mole Day

-- Becca Lash (Staff Writer)

As October comes to an end, the College Chemistry Class looks back on what a successful month it was. Throughout the month, they have been getting ready for various activities that have been going on. The two main activities that they have been working extremely hard on include Fall Harvest Day and Mole Day.
Fall Harvest Day was held on Thursday, October 16 this year. At the festival, The club sold various things, including “Molenuts”, Dry Ice Punch, and Liquid Nitrogen Marshmallows. A bake sale was also held to benefit the Brosovich family. With the money raised from the bake sale, and other donations, they were able to raise over $100. The club would like to thank everyone for their generous offerings.
Mole Day, as most people know, is celebrated on October 23 of every year. Mole Day officially starts at 6:02 AM and ends at 6:02 PM. The time and date came from Avogadro’s constant, which is approximately 6.02x1023 . This number defines the number of particles in one mole, one of the seven base SI units. To celebrate this event, the class did several demonstrations to different classes throughout the day. These demonstrations required a large amount of time and effort, but the class was up for the challenge. These experiments ranged in difficulty from freezing marshmallows with Liquid Nitrogen, to catching someone’s hand on fire with methane bubbles. This year’s Mole Day was a lot of fun for the Chemistry class, and they all hope that next year’s Mole Day brings even bigger thrills.
