Poinsettias

-- Rachel Burns (Staff Writer)

Mr. Hughes is in charge of the horticulture department at West Greene.  As many of you may know the greenhouse sells different flowers as fundraisers.  During the fall it is mums, and during the Christmas season it is poinsettias .Well it is that time of year, and the greenhouse will be selling poinsettias.  The sale will begin at the end of November and will run until Christmas break.  The plants were raised by Dr. Daniels.

Poinsettias are a Christmas flower.  They are originally from Mexico, and the United States Ambassador to Mexico introduced them to the United States.  This man is Joel Poinsett, and not only was he the Ambassador; he is the man that can be given credit for poinsettias.  They were first introduced in 1825.  These flowers are now commercially grown in all 50 states.  There is even a day dedicated just for poinsettias.  This day is December 12 and is called National Poinsettia Day.

There will be four different colors; they are red, pink, white, and marble.  They will be sold in four different sizes.  The sizes of the pots are 6”, 7”, 8”, and in baskets.  To purchase one of these plants you must see Mr. Hughes or one of his students.  Each size has a different price.  The 6” pot will cost $8.00.  Seven inch pots will cost $11.00 and 8” pots will cost $16.00.  The baskets will cost $34.00.  Selling these plants will help to raise money for the horticulture classes and the greenhouse.
