Softball Season

--Rachel Burns (Staff Writer)

The spring sport season is quickly approaching.  One of the spring sports is softball.  The softball team has just recently started their open gym.  The team will be coached by head coach William Simms (the West Greene Middle Senior High- School Athletic Director) and assistant coaches Lorie Hildreth and Jeremiah Allison.  These coaches will be returning for their fourth season coaching the girls’ softball team.

The softball team has been to playoff the past four years.  They have also been section runner up several years.  The girls will be competing to go to playoffs.  They will also be competing to take the section title this year.  There are five teams in the softball section other than West Greene: Jefferson- Morgan, Carmichaels, California, Geibel, and Mapletown.  Some of you may be wondering why Frazier has not been named; this school has been taken out of this particular section.  Not only will the team compete with these five schools, but also with several other schools.  These games will be played as exception games.

The team has several returning players.  Three of these players are seniors.  The seniors are Rachel Burns, Sarah Burns, and Samantha Milliken.  Another returning player who is a junior is Mary Burns.  There are three sophomores returning Courtney Eddy, Katie Tuttle, and Kayla Cooke.  Along with these return girls there will be several other girls coming out to join the team this year.

Official softball season will begin in March.  The team will start off with official practice.  Shortly after this is when the girls will start into playing games.  The season ahead looks to be a promising one for the team.  Home games will be played in Rogersville at the Center Township Park.  This is the place where practice will occur if it is not in the gym.
