History Club Projects:
West Greene High School's 50-year Anniversary! The school year of 2008-2009 marks 50 years of West Greene school district's devotion to the education of young adults. The History Club wishes to create a pamphlet and/or presentation of the past half century in order to recap the history of our school. If anyone has any information they wish to share about West Greene, please submit them to the History Club. We are looking for anecdotes, stories (good and bad), and any other information about West Greene available. Also, if you would like to be interviewed about your experiences at West Greene, please contact Mr. Hunter and arrangments will be made. We greatly appreciate any help that can be given in compiling the history of West Greene high school.
The Veteran's History Project The History Club has joined the Veteran's History Project, which is sponsored by the Library of Congress. The project attempts to collect and publish war veteran stories and artifacts. If accepted, the projected is published in the Library of Congress under the name of the student who completed it. Thus far, within the club, one project has been completed with several more in process. Also, any veteran or survivor of a veteran may contact the History Club if they wish to be interviewed for the project. We greatly appreciate volunteers!
The Archeological Expedition Recently, the History Club has been researching an unregistered African American cemetary in Greene County and (possibly) the family's homestead. The club hopes to compile enough information on the family to have the cemetary registered, thus requiring the owners of the land to be responsible for the upkeep of it. Also, contact with a surviving family member has been made for further references. Also, in November of 2007, the club made a trip to the site and began to map it out. Photographs of the gravestones and videos of the students working there were made, as well as a scale map of the site depicting the distances between the stones, and their geographic locations. Aside from that, they also photographed a nearby house with some architectural characteristics that Mr. Hunter suspects may be mid-18 hundred's centered. The club suspects that this house may have been the home of the family in the cemtary. Aside from the house and graveyard, the club also found three other structures that may have been adjacent to the house property and a well across the road from the house. |
