Ms. Rebecca McCollum, Middle School Social Studies Teacher, is a graduate of Waynesburg Central High School who earned her degree from California University of PA in social studies education. McCollum has always been a passionate learner and strives to “infect [her] students with a love of learning.”
McCollum appreciates the small size of West Greene and the opportunities offered to get to know everyone well. She also enjoys the idyllic country setting.
McCollum is an ardent world traveler and has been to 17 countries around the globe. She incorporates her travels into her lessons and inspires students to be curious about the world and its history. McCollum stresses that “people are people no matter where in the world” and the forces that drive people to act -- family, love, hatred, power -- are universal, yet demonstrated differently between cultures and historic eras.
In looking back over her career at West Greene, McCollum’s most memorable moment deals with a discussion of Greek philosophy with her 7th grade students. One of her students begged, “Stop! Stop! My head is exploding!” This same student came back the next day and said that she’d “thought about it all night!” It was rewarding for McCollum to see that seed of learning beginning to sprout and grow in her students.
In addition to her world travels, McCollum also enjoys staying home to read and knit. She enjoys spending time with her family, and sometimes their gatherings are quite loud, yet engaging, because they all love learning and discussing new ideas.
